Blog Series: Interview with Emeritus Justice Edwin Cameron
Editor’s note: This video is part of a series of interviews that we conducted with members of the South African Judiciary to commemorate 30 years of democracy in South Africa. The purpose of these interviews was to reflect on and discuss the development of South Africa’s constitutional democracy since its first democratic election in 1994.
Justice Edwin Cameron was a Justice of the Constitutional Court from his appointment in 2008 until he retired in 2019. Throughout his career, he has made considerable contributions to the development of South Africa’s constitutional democracy as a scholar, activist, practitioner and judge. His commitment to equality, human rights and access to justice is evidenced in his judgments and in his powerful advocacy for LGBTQ+ rights and the destigmatisation of HIV/AIDS. Since his retirement from the Constitutional Court, Justice Cameron has served as the Inspecting Judge of the Judicial Inspectorate for Correctional Services (JICS), an independent body responsible for the oversight of the Department of Correctional Services and for upholding and protecting the rights of incarcerated persons.
